UCF Homecoming Week

During homecoming week at UCF, there are many events that fellow Knights can participate in. Ranging from concerts, to something called Spirit Splash, students alike have a chance to meet one another and form meaningful connections.

During this time, long-lasting friendships can be made, networking can be completed, and lifelong memories can be formed.

Reflection

My most meaningful experience in regards to citizenship would have to be attending UCF Spirit Splash. During Spirit Splash, many UCF students charge into the reflection pond and find rubber ducks to collect. On top of this, it is also a place to meet new friends and make new memories.

While it may not be apparent at first, I actually learned quite a few new skills while attending Spirit Splash. These skills included empowering others, group dynamics, considering others’ thoughts and feelings, as well as networking/ building connections.

One example of a situation where I learned these skills during Spirit Splash is when there was a senior in the Reflection Pond trying to collect a duck. This had been her first time ever attending and she had just narrowly missed getting one of the ducks. She seemed upset, especially considering this would be her first and last chance of participating in Spirit Splash at UCF. Seeing her upset, I took it upon myself to giver her the duck that I had collected. I figured that I had other years that I could attend Spirit Splash; a chance that she did not have. It was here that I developed my skill of taking others’ thoughts and feelings into account.

I was able to adapt these skills into a different situation when I decided to be the leader of my group project. As group leader, it is essential that you are able to delegate the concerns of everyone involved in a civil and constructive manner. This ties into not only considering everyone’s thoughts and feelings, but also empowering others, and strengthening group dynamics.

In the future, I plan to apply these skills by being able to connect with my patients on a level that goes above and beyond. Showing compassion and expressing empathy towards those you try to help, can help their healing transcend in ways that were once seen as impossible. I strive to achieve this by truly understanding their personal situations, thoughts, and feelings.

These learned skills tie back into my experiences because I understand how it feels to be seen as an outcast or not be seen at all. It goes a long way when you know that there is someone who truly cares for and about you. I believe that if this can become a modern practice in today’s medicine, what we achieve in healthcare will know no bounds.

Concert Knights

Pictured to the right, is when I attended Concert Knight, a tradition for homecoming week. This event allows students to meet each other as well as enjoy music from popular artists.

Attending Concert Knights pushed me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to meet new friends, all while enjoying upbeat music.

I learned how to communicate effectively, initiate conversation, among many other soft skills.
